magical people
Normal people, of ages from 13 to 20, that woke up one day and discovered they can transform into magical girls and boys, as long as they hold onto an unlocker. They don't know how it happened; nobody does. Some question it, some hide it and some just make profit with it. It is very common for magical girls and boys to seek out media attention through open fights and showcases of their magical abilities. They are treated as idols by most of the world's population, and frequently appear on TV, as well as live meets-and-greets with their fans.

Magical girls and boys wake up on a random day in their transformation and holding their unlocker. Their abilities/powers appear in their minds like memories. People don't recognize them when they are in transformation, unless the magical person reveals their true identity.

unlocker

An unlocker is a simple item (can be a pen, a letter, a necklace, etc.) no bigger than half an arm. It usually is of some significance to the magical person, but there have been cases where the magical person hasn't even seen the item before in their lives. A magical girl/boy must be holding their unlocker to get into transformation and perform their abilities. If an unlocker is destroyed, the magical person becomes normal again forever. If a magical person gets hold of another magical person's unlocker, they can transform with both unlockers individually and have different abilities/transformations on each. An unlocker is useless in the hands of a normal person.

transformation

During a magical person's transformation, the person automatically changes clothes/hairstyle in a matter of seconds. When the transformation goes off, the magical person regains the clothes/hairstyle they had before the transformation. A magical transformation is usually themed after the magical person's unlocker (be it after the colors, patterns, shapes, etc.). While transformed, a magical person cannot take off anything that is part of the transformation (cannot get undressed, remove an accessory, etc.). If they try to, the piece they took off disappears and reappears on them again instantly.

powers

The powers of a magical person are limited to three abilities. The three abilities are themed after the person's unlocker. This theme is called "affinity". For example, if a magical person's unlocker is a whisk, their affinity would be cooking, and their abilities would have to be inspired by cooking (eg. giant waves of flour). They are rated by rank and difficulty. The rank shows how powerful the ability is and the difficulty shows how much effort it takes to be performed. The rank can go up to 3 (everyone starts out with three abilities in rank 1, and can level them up through training). Difficulty can go up to 10. Difficulty shows how much an ability weakens the caster after being cast. If someone casts an ability with level 2 difficulty, they won't be affected much. If they cast an ability with level 10 difficulty, they will most likely faint, or at least won't be able to stand up properly. Everyone starts with the highest level of difficulty on each ability (depending on the rank).

A rank 1 ability can be of 1, 2 or 3 level of difficulty.

A rank 2 ability can be of 4, 5 or 6 level of difficulty.

A rank 3 ability can be of 7, 8, 9 or 10 level of difficulty.

A magical person does not have to call out the ability's name to cast it (they only need to imagine it), but people usually do it anyway for publicity.

hunters
Like the name suggests, hunters are people who hunt. But unlike normal hunters, they hunt magical people and not animals. They are people who destroy unlockers and forcefully take away the magic from the magical people. Not all have the same reason for doing so. Some do it out of jealousy, some because of religious beliefs, some purely for the fun of it. Though the media tend to ignore them, several of them have online fans similar to those of the magical girls'/boys'. Anyone can become a hunter, and without any threat from the law, as long as they don't physically harm magical people when trying to steal their unlockers.

civilians
Civilians are your everyday people. They are businessmen/women, they are students, they are fans, they are the normal sort. The other two groups originate from here. A civilian can change into a magical person or a hunter whenever they want, as long as they are of age/have a reason for it (respectively).

In a world where people constantly seek new distractions from their dull daily lives, idols have started becoming a bit too mainstream. There's a new trend in Tokyo now. Magical girls and boys fight each other in the middle of the streets, on top of buildings, in mid-air even, for no apparent reason. But it's entertaining; it'll have to do.

Mahou Shoujo Syndrome is an original magical girl/boy roleplay.
